Requests to use open flames during special ceremonies and theatrical performances must be reviewed and approved by EH&S prior to the activity and require the completion of an “Application for Use of Open Flame Devices.” Applications should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the event.
Battery operated candles should be used whenever possible.
Candles (if approved), must be located in a way that they are separated from the general public (i.e. stages, platforms, etc.) Candles carried by people through an auditorium, such as a candlelight service, present a great hazard and this practice is prohibited. Candlelight vigils are allowed outside with the completion of an “Application for the Use of Open Flame Devices.”
Exceptions to this policy may include, but are not limited to approved laboratory and classroom activities (Bunsen burners); food preparation areas; approved contractor, Facilities Services, and departmental operations (torches, welding, etc.); and some initiation ceremonies and theatrical performances.
Bonfires are prohibited on all East Carolina University property.
Event safety is the responsibility of the event organizer for the duration of the event.
