Open Flame Devices

  • Requests to use open flames during special ceremonies and theatrical performances must be reviewed and approved by EH&S prior to the activity and require the completion of an “Application for Use of Open Flame Devices.” Applications should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the event.
  • Battery operated candles should be used whenever possible.
  • Candles (if approved), must be located in a way that they are separated from the general public (i.e. stages, platforms, etc.) Candles carried by people through an auditorium, such as a candlelight service, present a great hazard and this practice is prohibited. Candlelight vigils are allowed outside with the completion of an “Application for the Use of Open Flame Devices.”
  • Exceptions to this policy may include, but are not limited to approved laboratory and classroom activities (Bunsen burners); food preparation areas; approved contractor, Facilities Services, and departmental operations (torches, welding, etc.); and some initiation ceremonies and theatrical performances.
  • Bonfires are prohibited on all East Carolina University property.
  • Event safety is the responsibility of the event organizer for the duration of the event.
