Safety and Environmental Policy Statement

Welcome to this year’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, prepared in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1990. Please take the time to review this annual report. The report contains crime statistics and vital campus safety information. The safety and security of our campus is a shared responsibility. Our community and safety team must work together to create and maintain a safe living and learning environment. To help meet this goal, I strongly encourage you to download the ECU LiveSafe app and register for ECU Alerts. ECU invests millions of dollars each year in police, security, education and other safety resources and infrastructure. While we continue to improve our overall safety program, one area of emphasis this year involves expanding our partnership with the City of Greenville and the Greenville Police Department. Our collaborative relationship has resulted in decreased crime and safety improvements both on and off campus. Over the summer, we took steps to build upon that relationship and further reduce crime in our community. First, the City and ECU signed agreements to provide additional ECU Police officers in the Uptown district. This additional crime prevention effort in Uptown is necessary to serve the needs of our expanding campus and off-campus student housing. Second, the City agreed to extend the ECU Police jurisdiction to citywide. This will allow our officers to better serve off-campus students and respond more quickly to assist Greenville Police officers when a serious crime occurs. The primary mission for ECU Police officers will continue to be patrolling and protecting our campus, but we also recognize our duty and commitment to our off-campus students and the need to serve the community. Finally, ECU is working with the City to improve pedestrian safety and expand our safety corridors program. To create these safety corridors, ECU is installing the emergency (bluelight) phones and cameras while the city of Greenville and Greenville Utilities are upgrading the lighting to LED. The City and ECU are also collaborating to install rapid flashing beacons along the campus edge at Cotanche Street to assist pedestrians in crossing this busy street.
