ECU and the Office of EH&S are committed to providing a safe and healthy work and learning environment for all employees. The ECU Hazard Communication program (HazCom) complies with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29CFR1910.1200). The requirements of the OSHA standard are consistent with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals or GHS. This system is an international approach to hazard communication that provides agreed-upon criteria for classifying chemical hazards; standardization of Safety Data Sheets (SDS); and labeling requirements for chemical containers.
The purpose of the HazCom program is to increase employee awareness of hazardous substances stored and used in the workplace so that they can recognize known and potential hazards. The HazCom program improves the quality and consistency of hazard information in the workplace. This information is communicated in three primary ways:
- Employee information and training;
- Labels and other forms of warning; and
- Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
Furthermore, a list of hazardous substances, or “chemical inventory”, known to be present in the workplace has to be created, kept current and submitted, at least annually, to EH&S.
The ultimate goal of these efforts is to empower the individual worker with knowledge and skills so that they can protect themselves, coworkers and the environment.
