Chemical Hazards Basics

Carcinogens: Substances that may cause cancer in humans and animals under certain conditions. An example is Chromic Acid.

Corrosive: Substances that cause visible destruction or permanent change to skin tissue on contact. An example is Hydrochloric Acid.

Flammable: Liquids with a flash point of 100o F causing the vapor above the liquid to ignite easily. An example is Acetone (most solvents).

Hepatotoxin: Substances that may cause damage to the liver. An example is Chloroform.

Mutagen: Substances that may cause changes in the genetic material of cells. An example is Ethidium Bromide.

Nephrotoxin: Substances that may cause damage to the kidneys. An example is Acetonitrile.

Neurotoxin: Substances that are harmful to the nervous system. An example is Acrylamide.

Reactive: Substances that react strongly or violently. Examples include Pyrophorics, Oxidizers, Explosives.

Teratogens: Substances that may affect the development of an embryo or fetus. An example is Formamide.
