Hand Protection

Proper hand gloves should be selected for jobs with potential hazards such as skin absorption of harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, chemical burns, or extreme temperatures. They should also be used when hands may become contaminated with work materials including chemicals, radioisotopes, or biological agents.

Selection and use should be based on initial hazard assessment to evaluate the performance characteristics of the hand relative to the task(s), conditions present, duration of use, and potential hazards. Since there is no one size fits all, the glove selection guide should be used to assess hand hazards and the appropriate type of glove for those hazards. Chemical compatibility property may be used to confirm performance rating for specific gloves.
