Safety Shoes FAQ

How do I know if I am eligible for safety shoes?

Eligible employees are full-time, part-time or temporary employees of the University that are exposed to potential foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, objects piercing the sole, electrical hazards, etc., as confirmed by the employee supervisor and EH&S. Students are not included in the safety shoe program. EH&S may include student employees if assignment exposes them to foot injuries and departments are willing to have the charges posted to their FOAP. Students with the potential for foot injuries are encouraged to wear approved foot protection.

When are new/existing employees enrolled in the program?

New employees should request safety shoes within 30 days of hire to identified departments. If a department is concerned that employees are potentially exposed they should send eligible employee(s) full name(s), Banner ID, and departmental FOAP account to EH&S for enrollment.

How do I know my next due date for shoes?

The Safety Shoe website contains a Shoe Tracker that should list all eligible employees and their due date for shoes. If you cannot find the list contact EH&S.

How much is the approved rate for safety shoes?

The current rate as approved by the Office of State Budget and Management is $100 per pair, per calendar year. Any additional costs exceeding the given rate shall be borne by the employee at time of purchase.

What is considered an acceptable or approved safety shoe?

Approved safety shoes are those that comply with current ASTM F-2412-2005 and F-2413-2005 standards. This standard has currently replaced the ANSI-Z41-1999 standard, for more information see ASTM announcement. Any shoe purchase that does not meet this provision shall not be accepted and reimbursement will not be provided.

Where and how can I purchase safety shoes?

EH&S schedules shoe mobile visits to campus once every quarter. Approved safety shoe vendors are Saf-Gard, Sutton’s Safety Shoes, and 264 Shoes. Dates are posted on the EH&S Safety Shoe website. Shoe vouchers ($100) are distributed to eligible employees through their supervisors prior to each visit. If you are unable to attend the shoe mobile at the scheduled time, the voucher is valid for the entire month at 264 Shoes. Approved safety shoes can also be purchased out of pocket and the employee reimbursed. Reimbursement requirements include: Upon purchase employee should bring original receipt of purchase, and the safety shoe (for inspection) to the EH&S office.

Can I get a second shoe replacement within the same year?

No. Employees are encouraged to make a good selection at the time of purchase and ensure shoes are well maintained within the period of validity (12 months). If replacement is necessary due to the job environment, employee should work with supervisors to ensure adequate foot protection.

If I declined safety shoe voucher at time of shoe mobile visit, will I receive another voucher at their next visit?

Employees that declined vouchers will need to contact EH&S to ensure they receive a voucher for the next shoe mobile visit.
